IN BRIEF

MOSCOW, 25 October 2023. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the findings of a monitoring survey devoted to the most attractive employers. The survey was conducted in cooperation with the “Best in Russia Awards”.

Gazprom – where dreams come true!

For the third consecutive year, Gazprom has been at the top of the employer rating: 32% of working-age Russians chose this company from the list of Russian employers (40% in 2022; 32% in 2021). A distant second place is held by four other companies - RZhD, Rosneft, Sberbank and Rosatom (13%, each). As in the previous surveys, the global energy company dominates heavily with 32% (vs 13%). Ten percent of respondents would willingly agree to work for Yandex; since 2021 this company has slightly slipped in the rating -   two years ago Yandex was among top three best employers (along with RZhD and Gazprom), as every sixth respondent wanted to be employed by Yandex (17%).

Another 9% of the working-age respondents point out Lukoil; 8% (each) opted for Roskosmos, Nornickel, Tinkoff Bank. Top retailers are Wildberries and Ozon (7% and 4%, respectively). VK (4%), Rusal (4%), VTB (4%), EuroChem (3%), Alfa Group (3%) and Magnit (2%) round up the top employers. Eight percent of the working-age Russians would not like to work for either of the listed companies (–5 p.p. since 2022).

  • “Male” dream companies are Rosatom (16% vs 10% of women) and Rosneft (16% vs 10% of women); “female” companies are Sberbank (17% vs 10% of men) and Wildberries (11% vs 4% of men).
  • Top 3 companies popular with young Russians aged 18–24 are Tinkoff bank (25%), Gazprom (24%) and Sberbank (23%). Russians aged 25-34 prefer Gazprom (30%), Sberbank and Yandex (18%, each).
  • The higher the level of education, the more often Russians see Rosatom as their dream company (vs 6-7% of those with secondary special or lower level of education and 19% of those with higher education diplomas).

How we choose an employer…

When choosing a company to work for, most of Russians pay attention to salary (4.67 scores), whether the company fulfils its obligations in a timely manner and completely (4.64 scores), and whether the company abides by workplace safety rules (4.58 scores).

Russians equally appreciate good psychological climate in a team (4.43 scores), stability and confidence that no changes for the worse will happen (4.42 scores), and having an opportunity to apply their skills and knowledge (4.41 scores). Comfortable workplace conditions scored 4.36; convenient work schedule, 4.32; social package, 4.31.

Other important criteria include effective management system (4.18 scores), opportunity to take courses paid by the employer (4.07 scores), and opportunity to work remotely (3.22 scores).

Dissatisfaction with the current job

What Russians are happy with at their current jobs is convenient working hours (4.29 scores), opportunity to apply skills and knowledge (4.26 scores), good psychological climate in the team (4.22 scores) and workplace safety (4.21 scores).

Satisfaction with workplace conditions is higher than average (4.10 scores), whereas company’s ability to fulfill its obligations as an employer raise more doubts: over the recent year the average satisfaction level has decreased by 0.26 scores (4.06 scores in 2023).

Social package and good salary scored 3.83 and 3.72 scores respectively. This is followed by stability (3.70 scores), strong management (3.69 scores), and opportunity to take courses paid by the employer (3.67 scores). Least of Russians are satisfied with their opportunity to work remotely (3.18 scores).

Russian nationwide telephone survey was conducted 4-6 October 8, 2023. A total of 1,200 Russians (women aged 18-56 and men aged under 61) were surveyed. Survey method: telephone interviews, stratified random sample based on a complete list of mobile phone numbers in use in Russia. The data were weighted for socio-demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes to the wording of questions and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
