Only 22% of Russians aged 18 and older say they do not have a PC.
MOSCOW, August 06, 2020 Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the findings of a survey describing computer/laptop use among Russians.
A majority of Russians (78%) has a laptop or a personal computer; 34% say they have several devices at the same time. Ten years ago 51% of Russians said they had computers, regardless of the number of the devices; only 7% of Russians had PCs in 2001.
Thirty-seven percent of Russians say they use computer at home on a daily basis (+15 p.p. over ten years); 36% use computers at work (+20 p.p.). Every fourth Russian never uses a PC at home; this share has decreased by half over ten years (from 53% to 25%). Almost half of Russians (46%; −23 p.p. since 2010) do not use a PC at work; three-quarters use a computer when they go to friends’ houses or in the Internet café (73%; −3 p.p.).
Most of Russians use a computer to go online: to search for information, to go online shopping, to communicate via social networks (79%, +16 p.p. over ten years). Forty-eight percent of Russians use computers for work (this percentage has not changed over ten years). Thirty percent of Russians watch movies or listen to the music via a computer; 22% use it for the studies (+6 p.p. since 2010). The number of those who use computers for gaming has decreased (13%, −7 p.p.).
Russian VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on July 26, 2020. Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,600 Russians aged 18 and older. A stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of Russian landline and mobile phone number was used. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes to the wording of questions and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
