Every second Russian Internet user use smartphones to connect to the web. Commonly, people surf the Internet to follow news, search for information, listen to music and watch movies.

MOSCOW, May 19, 2015. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the results of the survey describing how many Russians use the Internet , what devices they use to connect to the web, and what kind of content they are interested in.


The number of the Internet users has almost stayed the same over the recent year; the share makes up two-thirds of Russians (66% in 2014 and 69% in 2015).  Half of respondents (52%) surf the Internet every day, and this share keeps increasing (10-fold increase since 2006). Every fifth (17%) uses the Internet several times per week or per month.

Active Internet users involve mainly young Russians (96% among 18-24-year-old respondents), residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg (88%), those who have high level of income (85%) and who graduated from the universities (81%).

Stationary devices are getting less popular compared to the mobile ones. Since 2012, the share of Russians who use tablets to go online has increased ten folds (from 4% to 41%, including 21% of those who do it every day), the share of those who use smartphones has increased 3.5 folds (from 15% to 55%, including 39% of those who do it every day). Laptops are increasingly used to connect to the web - from 38% in 2012 to 61% in 2015. Every third Russian connects to the Internet using mobile phones (33%); since 2012, this share has been almost the same (32% in 2012). Seventy-three percent of Russians browse the web, download files and chat using computers (every day - 44%); 78% in 2012.

More and more people use the World Wide Web. The most common things that people are interested in on the Internet include media (music, movies, books) – 56%, news and information – 55% (per each group), electronic mail – 53%, studies and work – 50%. Four out of ten Internet users (44%) are engaged in social networking, online chats and forums. People also search for new friends in the Internet (32%), play games (31%) and shop online (25%). Every tenth (9%) visits porn sites.

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted March 21-22, 2015; 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.5%.
