IN BRIEF

More Russians feel the effects of the anti-Russian sanctions as they hit Russian pockets.

MOSCOW, March 4, 2015. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data of the survey devoted to the attitudes of Russians towards anti-Russian sanctions imposed by western countries and to the question whether they feel the effects of the sanctions.

Every second Russian (51%) is aware of sanctions imposed by western countries. Most of Russians are well informed about the restrictions on import/export of certain goods (46% of those who are aware of sanctions). Many Russians cite entry ban for certain officials, businessmen and other persons  (26%) and economic sanctions (21%).

Thirty-three percent of Russians  who are aware of sanctions believe that the sanctions were supposed to lead Russia to an economic crisis (there were no such persons in August 2014). Every fifth  thinks that sanctions were aimed at weakening the Russia`s position in the international arena  (22%) or oppressing Russia (20%).

Over half a year  the share of Russians who mention negative effects of sanctions has increased from 15% to 57%. Only 18% of Russians notice improvements (15% in August 2014). The share of those who see no changes has considerably decreased  (from 62% to 19%).

Since the first wave of the anti-Russian sanctions, more Russians have felt their effects: whereas in August 2014 the share of such respondents made up 5%, today this part is equal to 45%. The basic complain refer to the price increase and worsening financial situation (85%). Fifty percent of respondents  mention no changes .

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted on February 14-15, 2015. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 132 communities in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.5%.
