Does being sociable, sporty and materialistic make young people distinct from others?
MOSCOW, June 25, 2019. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the findings of a survey devoted to the qualities of modern Russian youth.
A set of key traits that modern Russian youth possess has been the same over the last five years. Russians still perceive young people as very sociable (67% in 2019 and 72% in 2014), sports-oriented individuals (60% in 2019 and 54% in 2014) focused on material values (82% in 2019 and 75% in 2014). Remarkably, the first two values are often cited by young respondents (aged 18-24) and the 25-34-year-olds. Those who say that young people tend to be focused on material values are mainly respondents aged 35-44.
Half of respondents also say that modern young people are likely to be active (48%), open and friendly (47%); however the share of those who thought so two years ago was higher (54% and 57% respectively). Forty-one percent of respondents (mainly persons aged 60 and over (46%)) consider that young people are passive. Thirty-eight percent say they are arrogant; those who think so are basically respondents aged 18-24 (43%) and those aged 35-44 (45%).
Whether young people are benevolent (43% vs 41%), responsive (41% vs 47%), honest (39% vs 43%), ready to help (42% vs 43%) and patriotic (42% vs 44%) is very debatable. Young people are extremely self-critical: respondents aged 25-34 disagree with the first three attributes (46%, 54% and 54, respectively).
A list of the least typical characteristics has not changed much over the last five years. This list comprises thriftiness (54%), hard work (54%), attention to personal health (52%), high cultural level and politeness (52%), as well as sincerity (51%) and religiosity (50%).
VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on June 19, 2019. The survey involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and was carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
