Over the recent two or three years only one-fifth of Russians have happened to fly.

MOSCOW, February 7, 2014. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning the following questions: how often Russians fly; why they refuse to fly; whether they want to learn how to fly a plane.

Most of Russians (79%) has not happened to fly over the recent two or three years. Most of them put it down by the lack of reasons to travel (30%). One-fifth of respondents (22%) points out the lack of money. Twelve percent of respondents did not have any need to travel long distances. Eleven percent of respodnents refuse to travel due to expensive ticket prices. Other reasons why Russians do not fly much are as follows: they have a fear of flying (4%), no time (4%), or they use other means of transport (4%), et cet.

Every fifth Russians have traveled anywhere by plane over the recent several years (19%). At the same time, over the recent two or three years, 9% of Russians have traveled by air only once; 7% - not more than three times. The most typical air passenger can be portrayed as a young person aged 25-34 years (28%), who has high level of education (32%), high income (41%) and lives in Moscow or St.Petersburg (42%). Those who have not used airline services are elderly respondents (90%), rural area residents (89%), respondents with elementary education (97%) and low income (90%).

One-fifth of respodnents (21%) would like to learn how to fly a plane; they are mainly 18-24-year-old Russians (35%), mostly men (26%), persons with higher education diplomas (26%). Three-quarters of respondents (75%) have no skills to fly a plane and do not have any desire to learn how to do that; they are basically women (80%), persons aged 60 and over (88%), and respondents with low level of education (78%). Only 1% of respondents can pilot a plane.

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted on January 25-26, 2014. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
