IN BRIEF

According to Russians, the ideal boss should be Russian mature family man.

MOSCOW, December 3, 2010. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing what kind of person Russians think the ideal boss should be.

Russians think that the ideal boss should be compatriot (76%) or the same nationally as his /her subsidiaries (58%). Besides, Russians prefer a male (54%), who has family (56%) and is older than the subordinates are (40%).

With regard to the management style, Russians think that to make the best possible decisions the boss should get an advice from colleagues and give the subsidiaries an opportunity to devise initiative (57%), invent something new and modernize the workflow (52%). Besides that, 60% of respondents would like their boss to be interested not only in their work but in the problems of employees, for example the situation in their families.

The only factor that does not matter to the respondents is the religious orientation of the boss: 56% of respondents say it does not matter to them if their boss is a believer or not.  At the same time, the rest of respondents often say they would like their boss to be religious (30%).

The younger the Russians are, the more often they want their boss to be older than they are (78% of 18-24-year-olds versus  16% of elderly respondents); the  older the respondents are, the more often they report that age does not matter to them (from 13% among 18-24-year-old respondents to 32% among those aged 60 and above).

With regard to the boss`s gender, both men and women would like their boss to be a male (62 and 47% respectively). Nevertheless, many women do not think it is of importance (33% versus 25% among men).

The marital status of the chief is less important for men rather than for women:  41% of men and 31% of women report it does not matter to them. However, women prefer a married boss (61% versus 51% among male respondents).

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on 27-28 November, 2010. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin oferror does not exceed 3.4%.
