MOSCOWMarch 07, 2008 Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents information on what Russians think Vladimir Putin’s role in the domestic foreign politics should be after his resignation.Upon completion of his second presidential mandate V. Putin will continue to play an important role in the Russian politics, as the absolute majority of respondents assume (88%). This opinion is especially characteristic of those who voted for D. Medvedev at the elections on March 2 (93%), and to a smaller degree of those who supported V. Zhirinovsky (81%) and G. Zyuganov (74%). Only 5% of Russians think that V. Putin will not occupy a significant place in our country’s politics even after the elections. Only 3% of respondents who voted for D. Medvedev provided this forecast, however, V. Zhirinovsky’s and G. Zyuganov’s supporters are more likely to share this point of view (12% and 16%).As far as the wishes of Russians themselves are concerned, 25% of them believe that V.Putin should maintain the main levers of power in his hands even after his resignation. It is worth mentioning that this point of view seems to be more popular among D. Medvedev's supporters (29%), than among those who voted for V. Zhirinovsky or G. Zyuganov (14-15% each). Every tenth respondent (10%) shares the opinion that V. Putin should leave the big politics and let the new President rule the country totally on his own. Every third respondents among G. Zyuganov's supporters tend to think so (34%), whereas every forth one among V. Zhirinovsky’s voters does (28%). At the same time, no more than 3% of D. Medvedev’s voters would like him to lead the country independently. The majority of respondents (56%) think that the new president should have the main power; however, V. Putin should remain an influential politician. This distribution of forces would, first of all, suite D. Medvedev’s voters (62%), as well as those who voted for V. Zhirinovsky (50%), G. Zyuganov’s supporters seem to be less happy about it (39%).If V. Putin becomes the Prime Minister of our country in 2008, the essential part of the presidential powers will pass on to the Prime Minister of Russia: over a half of respondents (62%) are more or less sure that this is the way it will happen. Only 19% think that everything will remain the same as far as this issue is concerned. Those who voted for D. Medvedev are more likely to expect the redistribution of authorities from President D. Medvedev to Prime Minister V. Putin than the supporters of V. Zhirinovsky and G. Zyuganov, or those who did not intend to participate in the elections on March 2.The initiative All-Russia opinion poll was conducted by VCIOM on February 16-17, 2008. 1600 respondents were interviewed each time in 153 population areas of 46 regions of Russia. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.
