At the moment, only every hundredth Russian aged 18 and over do not eat meat as a matter of principle.
MOSCOW, August 2, 2018. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data of a survey devoted to vegetarianism.
Half of respondents (50%) consider that vegetarianism is a diet without meat and fish; a further 45% say that this is strictly vegetable food.
Among those who are aware of vegetarianism, 1% of respondents try to use this diet. Thirty-nine percent of respondents say that vegetarianism is dangerous to health. This opinion is shared by young people aged 18-24 (50%). However, every fifth (20%) considers this lifestyle healthy. A further 27% say vegetarianism has no effect on their body.
Those who think that vegetarianism is healthy often say that vegan lifestyle helps to cleanse the body (34%). Older people (60 and over) state that vegan diet contains plenty of vitamins (40%). Fewer respondents consider that this diet is light (15%), contains no cholesterol (14%) and harmful ingredients (12%).
Those who think that vegetarianism is unhealthy mainly point out that meat has the vitamins and nutrients vegans often lack (33%). The percentage of those who share this viewpoint is higher among the 18-24-year-olds (41%). Another reason why vegetarian diet can be dangerous is a need for proteins (28%). A further 13% respondents point to the importance of balanced diet (13%). Eleven percent of respondents are confident that going without meat and dairy products is not good.
The VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on July 31, 2018, and involved 1,000 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and was carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
