IN BRIEF

Most of Russians will spend vacations at home or at dacha. Those who will travel somewhere plan to spend a little bit more that they did previous year (27636 rub.).

MOSCOW, May 22, 2013. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data about how Russians are going to spend summer vacations and how much they plan to spend on travelling.

Most of Russians dream of going abroad (33%); only 16% of Russians would stay home for their summer vacations.

Beach vacation is preferred by majority of Russians, followed by culture vacation (25%; 21% previous year). The shares of those who opt for heath resorts (21%), guest houses (20%), or hiking (17% are lower. Least of Russians choose health resort or staying at home (10%).

According to Russians, most of them spent last summer at home (47%). The remainder went to dachas (25%), rarer to other cities of Russia, Black Sea Coast (10%, for each), abroad (8%); few of them went to places on the former USSR territory (3%) or Baltic States (2%).

Many Russians are confident that this summer will be neither better, nor worse for them (59%). However, year-by-year more Russians are optimistic about their upcoming summer vacation (from 13% in 2009 to 24% currently).

During this summer season, 45% of Russians plan to stay home (50% a year ago). Every fifth Russian plans to go to dacha (22%). Rarer Russians will travel across cities of Russia (11%) or will go to the Black Sea Coast (10%), abroad (9%), other places on the territory of the former USSR (2%), or will travel to Baltic States (1%). Those who are going to stay at home do so because of lack of money (47%). Less Russians complain about work overload (12%), health problems (10%), family circumstances or lack of desire to go anywhere (7%, for each), or being busy with their household chores (4%).

As to children vacations, 37% cite their children will stay home (a year ago – 42%). Seventeen percent report that their children will spend vacations at dacha (17%). Twelve percent (per each group) will send children to summer camps or to the Black Sea Coast of the Caucasus; 9% will travel across Russia with their children; 7% will send them abroad, 2% - to other CIS states. The remainder of Russians cites that their children will spend their vacations without them: on the territory of Russia (4%), abroad (1%) or will go hiking with other children (2%).

Respondents who plan to go somewhere will spend an average of 27636 rub for one family member (a year ago - 27220). Thus, the growth rate makes up 2% compared to the previous year.

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on May 12-13, 2013. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 130 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
