IN BRIEF

MOSCOW, April 26, 2010. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing how the budget Sochi Olympics should be used, and if Russia is capable of holding 2014 Olympics.

More than one-third of Russians cannot say how Russian government should use the Olympics budget (34%). However, many Russians support the idea to allocate money without restrictions rather than cutting costs (28% versus 21% respectively). Those who propose to turn to private investors and population for deficient amount for help are in the minority (9%).

Those who support the idea to allocate money for Olympics from budget without restrictions are Siberians and Far-easterners first of all (36 and 38% respectively), adherents of the United Russia and Fair Russia parties (31 and 30% respectively), and respondents with high financial income (32%). Those who oppose the idea are residents of North-Western Federal district (27%) and CPRF party supporters (30%).

As before, most Russians are confident that Russia is capable of holding Sochi Olympics, but the share of such respondents is declining year by year (from 92% in 2007 to 84% now). Compared with 2007, the proportion of respondents who are pessimistic about Russia` s capacities has increased four times (from 2 to 7%). The confidence is expressed by residents of Far East and Volga region of Russia (93 and 91% respectively), as well as inhabitants of small and middle-sized cities (87-88%). Least confident are respondents residing in North-Western and Urals Federal Districts (74% for each), and metropolitan residents (72%).

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on March 20-21, 2010. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 140 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4 %.
