Russians would like their children to have university diplomas.
MOSCOW, March 13, 2012. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning the level of education Russians think is enough for their children and grandchildren.
As before, most of Russians believe that their children should obtain university diploma (62%). Other 6% think it is necessary to complete postgraduate course or to get a degree in science. Twelve percent say that it is sufficient to have three-year or four-year university level (in 2002 they were 6%). The same share of respondents (12%) is confident that having secondary special education is enough (17% of Russians in 2002). Only 2% think that it is sufficient to have general secondary education (2% versus 6% in 2002), 1% - basic secondary education.
Young respondents think that complete higher education is the optimum level (64% versus 57% among elderly respondents). On the contrary, the older the respondents are, the more often they think that having secondary special education is enough for their children and grandchildren (from 7 to 19%).
The higher the level of education of Russians is, the more often they want their children to have university diplomas (70% of respondents with higher level of education against 53% with low level of education). On the contrary, Russians having elementary and secondary education think the optimum level is secondary special education (17-18% versus 1% of those with high level of education).
The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted December 10-11, 2011. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
