Every tenth Russian makes savings in dollar; every fifth keeps track of dollar exchange rate regularly.
MOSCOW, June 9, 2015. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the results of the survey describing where and in what currency it is better to invest money, according to Russians, and whether they keep track of the dollar exchange rates.
Russians believe that buying property is the most reliable way to invest money: half of respondents think so (47%); and this share has increased over the recent months (from 39% in February this year). Every fourth is confident that bank account is the best way to keep your money (23%). Seventeen percent would invest in gold and valuables. Others would keep money in cash (18%) rather than in foreign currency (8%).
Two-thirds of Russians are putting money aside; most of them use national currency. The share of those who make savings in national currency has increased from 50% in February to 58% in May. Eight percent of respondents say that they make savings in dollars (17% of the residents of Moscow and St.Petersburg); 15% of residents with high income); the share of Russians who keep money in dollars is twice smaller – 4%. One-third of respondents do not have savings (37%); this share grew twice less than in the second quarter of 2009 (66%).
More than half of Russians (59%) keep track of fluctuations in the dollar exchange rate: 22% do it regularly, 37% - from time to time. Most of those who keep track of the fluctuations in exchange rates are mainly metropolitan residents (81%), respondents with high level of income (73%) and good financial income (72%). Thirty-three percent of Russians do not keep track of changes in currency exchange rates (52% of rural area residents and 53% of retired persons vs. 19% of metropolitan residents and 34% of 18-34-year-olds).
The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted May 30-31, 2015; 1600 respondents were interviewed in 132 communities in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.5%.
