IN BRIEF

10% of Russians already know where they will spend their New Year vacations. They expect that their average spending will make up 21.441 rubles per person.

MOSCOW, October 8, 2013. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning how Russians are planning to spend the New Year holidays as well as how much money they are going to spend on that.

Russians make arrangements for New Year vacations in advance: only 5% of respondents make their choice in the last days before the vacations. More Russians plan their New Year trips half a year before or even earlier (14%), several months before (12%), or one month before the vacations (10%).

Not surprisingly, most of Russians have already decided where they will spend their New Year vacations (89%). At the same time, the share of those who have booked a tourist package is 10%: 3% will go abroad; 7% will travel to another destination within Russia.  Those who are most active in arranging New Year vacations are Muscovites and St.Petersburgians: every fifth has already thought about their New Year trips - 19%.

The average sum of money that Russians are planning to spend for New Year trips will probably be lower than they planned to spend for summer vacations: Russian tourists are planning to spend an average of  21.441 rubles (to compare: spending planned for summer vacations made up 27.636 rubles per person).

At the time, the average budget of Muscovites and St.Petersburgians may make up 37.500 rubles per person. Those who are willing to spend New Year vacations abroad will probably have higher spending - an average of 37.077  rubles per person. Those who will travel to another destination within Russia will spend 16.601 rubles per person.

The VCIOM opinion polls were conducted on September 21-22, 2013. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
