IN BRIEF

Half of respondents are confident that Russian emigrants are part of Russian people and they still stay Russian patriots.

MOSCOW, November 20, 2014. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the information concerning the question whether Russians who moved permanently abroad stay patriots or not.

Most of Russians are confident that Russians living abroad are still Russians: no matter if it is far abroad (58%) or former USSR republics (53%). On the contrary, almost one-quarter of respondents think that people staying in another state for long start to treat this state as a home country: no matter if it is far abroad (28%) or other countries (25%).

According to two-thirds of respondents, Russians living abroad are still part of Russian people (68%). Those who think so are mainly elderly respondents (73% aged over 60) and rural area residents (71%) rather than 25-24-year-olds (63%), and residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg (61%). Twenty-three percent of respondents oppose them stating that Russian emigrants fully assimilate with other peoples.

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted on June 28-29, 2014. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. Data are weighted by gender, age, education, working status and type of settlement.  The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
