Patriarch Kirill is known to most of Russians. Russians perceive Patriarch Kirill as moral mentor of Russia, rather than the leader of a religious confession.
MOSCOW, November 20, 2012. On the Birthday of Patriarch Kirill Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing how well Russians know him, and what they think about him.
Patriarch Kirill is known to most of Russians today: 62% of respondents could easily remember his name. Those who are most aware are respondents of pre-retirement and retirement age (71-72%), as well as those who have high level of education (64%) and reside in metropolitan areas (75%). To compare: two years ago the share of those who could easily name the patriarch of Russia was 71%. One-third of respondents (35%) do not know his name: they are basically young Russians (52%) and residents of big cities (47%).
As perceived by Russians, the head of the Russian Orthodox Church is a moral mentor of Russia (45%) or the leader of one of religious confessions of Russia (37%). Rarer the patriarch was perceived as a political leader or a member of top political management (9%). Those who perceive him as a moral mentor are women (48%), or respondents who do not have higher education diplomas (44-46%). Those who perceive him as the leader of a church are men (40%), Russians with high level of education (41%) and metropolitan residents (49%).
The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on June 9-10, 2012. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
