MOSCOW, 8 June 2023. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the findings of a survey to mark Russia Day.
What do we celebrate?
A vast majority of the Russians (70%) are aware that June 12 marks Russia Day. The awareness levels were rising from 2006 (62%), when the measurement started, till 2021 (73%).
On this day, the Russians are going to participate in public festivities (17%; 20% in 2020). Most of them are women (21% vs. 12% of men), rural area inhabitants (25% vs. 5% of metropolitan residents and 14-17% of those who live in the cities). Thirteen percent of the respondents are going to watch fireworks (17% in 2018). Other options include walks and staying in nature (picnic, barbecue, etc.) – 21%; guests – 14%; watching TV – 11%; going to a theatre, concert or cinema– 5%.
Twenty-five percent of the Russians are going to work, 22% to do household chores, 20% to work in the garden on June 12th. Over the recent five years the Russians have not changed their plans for this holiday much.

On successes and achievements
About half of the Russians gave a variety of answers when asked about significant achievements in our country over the recent 10-15 years (51%). Respondents mentioned reunification with the Crimea and new regions (11%), urban beautification, infrastructure development, road construction and repairs (9%). A part of respondents pointed to industrial and agricultural development including space industry (8%), development of economy, entrepreneurship, progress in import substitution (8%); the same percentage of the respondents mentioned social policies, support for maternity and childhood (8%). Other answers include sports achievements of the recent 10-15 years, Sochi Olympics, World Cup (8%); progress in defense industry, construction of the Crimean bridge, improvements in living standards (5%, each).
Role models to follow
About half of the Russians could name a person Russia can be proud of (49%); the first position is held by V.Putin (19%) and the military and the SMO participants (14%). They are followed by other political parties, athletes, and scientists.
VCIOM-Sputnik Russian nationwide telephone survey was conducted 2 June, 2023. A total of 1,600 Russians aged 18 and older took part in the survey. Survey method: telephone interviews, stratified random sample based on a complete list of mobile phone numbers in use in Russia. The data were weighted for socio-demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes to the wording of questions and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
