Results of our studies

IN BRIEF

Russians are more positive about the future. The share of Russians who have hopes and expect changes for the better, both for themselves and for the entire country, has considerably increased.

MOSCOW, December 26, 2019. Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) presents the data of a study devoted to what the year 2019 will be best remembered for, in the minds of Russians; what Russians expect for the upcoming year; how they plan to celebrate the New Year holiday season; what they are going to give as gifts; and how much money they are going to spend.

2019 events

Russians consider improvements in the situation in Syria to be the main global event of 2019 (9%). Other important world events are presidential elections in Ukraine and Putin’s meeting with Volodymyr Zelensky (3%, respectively).

The most important events on a national scale are pension reform (10%) and the opening of the Crimean bridge railway (4%). The main scandals of the year, according to Russians, refer to the doping scandal (7%), corruption (4%) and pension reform (4%).

Philipp Kirkorov is chosen by 5% of Russians as the musician of the year; 5% also pointed to the pianist Denis Matsuev. Emotions, assessments, expectations

Russians are bidding farewell to the outgoing year in a good mood: the corresponding index* is at 60 p.p.  On New Year’s Eve 2020, 55% of respondents feel joy and expect changes for the better; 24% feel calmness and confidence; 10%, sadness; 8%, disappointment.

When evaluating the outcomes of the year for themselves and their families, Russians tend to give lower assessments than for the last year: the index of personal outcomes** for 2019 is at 9 p.p. (vs 17 p.p. in 2018). Fifty-four percent of Russians say the year was “good” or “successful” for them personally; 45% say that their life was full of difficult situations or that the year was rather hard for them. On a national scale, the dynamics of assessments is not so positive: the corresponding index** shows a growth from -27 p.p. to 24 p.p., compared to the previous year. The balance of assessments is still negative: only one-third of respondents (34%) give positive assessments; more than half (58%) view the year negatively.

Russians have higher hopes on 2020 and expect changes for the better more than a year ago: the index of personal expectations*** from the upcoming year has increased from 34 p.p. in 2018 to 44 p.p. in 2019. The percentage of national-scale expectations has also considerably grown (from 3 p.p. to 10 p.p.). Twenty-one percent of respondents consider that the upcoming year will be successful for them personally; 16% think that 2020 will be successful for the country.

Plans, gifts, expenditures

Every fifth Russian (28%) is going to travel to another Russian city or rural area to celebrate the New Year holiday season; 3% will go abroad; 68% will go nowhere.

What are Russians going to do during the New Year holiday season? Many Russians are going to see friends and relatives (30%), to walk in nature (23%), to skate, to ski or to sledge (20%). Every fifth Russian (21%) will keep working; one-third (36%) will stay at home.

Home is still the main place to celebrate the New Year eve at (78% of respondents). Another 6% are going to see friends/relatives; 5% will go to their dacha. Only 7% say they do not have any special plans to celebrate the New Year’s Eve.

The sum of money Russians are going to spend on New Year’s night has decreased by 24%: an average sum is at 10,478 rub. (vs 13 ,55 rub. last year). According to respondents, they are going to spend an average of 4,203 rub. on gifts (vs 5,007 rub. in 2018); 3,912 rub. on the New Year’s table; 2,363 rub. on tickets to theaters, restaurants, New Year’s party for children, etc.

Desire and opportunity do not coincide when it comes to choosing gifts: many respondents will give sweets, alcohol and culinary delights as gifts (25%); but only 9% would like to get the same things as gifts. The most desired gifts are tour packages (11%), tickets to concerts, theatres or a dinner at a restaurant (10%). Seventeen percent of Russians are not going to give gifts; 31% would refuse to get any gifts.

This year VCIOM asked Russians which politician they would like to invite to their New Year’s Eve table: 22% chose Vladimir Putin; 12% mentioned Vladimir Zhirinovsky; 4% pointed at Dmitry Medvedev.

Russians were also asked to give associations to “New Year”. The most popular answers were “celebration/festivity” (24%), “joy/fun” (18%), “hope for the better” (15%), “fir tree” (14%) and “friends/relatives” (11%).

*Index describes an overall Russian perception of the outgoing year and hopes for the upcoming year. The Index is based on the question: “What feelings do you have bidding a farewell to the outgoing year and welcoming the upcoming year?” The answer “good feeling, a sense of optimism” corresponds to the coefficient “0.9”; the answer “I feel neither emotional upheaval nor negative emotions”– “0.5”; “Rather bad mood, pessimistic expectations” – “0.1”. The Index is measured in points and can vary between 10 and 90. The higher the value of index is, the more optimistic Russians are bidding farewell to the outgoing year and welcoming the upcoming year.

** Indices of personal outcomes and general country’s outcomes are based on the questions “What was the outgoing year like for you personally and your family?” and “What was the outgoing year like for Russia in general?” The Index is calculated as the difference of positive and negative assessments.  The value of Index may vary between -100 and 100 points. The higher the value of Index is, the more positive respondents are about the outgoing year.

*** Indices of Personal Expectations and Index of National Expectations are based on the questions “What do you and your family expect for the upcoming year?” and “What should Russia expect for the upcoming year?” The Index is calculated as the difference of positive and negative assessments. The value may vary between -100 and 100 points. The higher the value of Index is, the more positive respondents are about the future.

Russian VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted in November-December, 2019. Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,600 Russians aged 18 and older. A stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of Russian landline and mobile phone numbers is used. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.

The 2003-2016 results are based on household surveys.
