IN BRIEF

Russians support Crimeans not willing to make concessions when signing the power supply contract with Ukraine.

MOSCOW, January 28, 2016. Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) presents the results of the survey devoted to the opinions of Russians about the problem of power supplies of Crimea.

Crimea and Sevastopol electricity blockade drew a wide response among Russians; an overwhelming majority of them have heard about problems in energy supply (85%). Those who are more informed are elderly respondents (90% among 60—year-olds and over) and those with high level of education (91%) rather than young respondents (71% of 18-24-year-olds) and respondents with elementary level of education (81%).

Generally, Russians (87%) as well as residents of Crimea (93%) think it is unacceptable to sign energy supply contract where Crimea and Sevastopol are mentioned as part of Ukrainian territory. Only 6% of Russians (12% of non-parliamentary parties’ supporters) and 6% of Crimeans support the idea

According to the Medialogia company analysis, the topic of the Crimean power supply was mentioned more than 68 thousand times in the Russian media in 2015. The peak was in the end of the year: November (25.8 thousand mentions) and December (27.4 thousand mentions). The mass media reported on peninsula blackout in November. Due to power transmission line damage in the Kherson region, the Crimean power supply from Ukraine was completely knocked off. This led to gradual power blockade in the peninsula. In December, the mass media reported on break of blockade. The power bridge from Kuban was launched. The second leg of the power bridge was inaugurated by Vladimir Putin.

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted on January 16-17, 2016. A total of 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 settlements in 46 regions and republics of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.5%. Russian media monitoring and analysis were carried out by the Medialogia Company using approximately 30 200 sources such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, information agencies and online media.
