Eighty-six percent of residents of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic support joining Russia.
MOSCOW, June 17, 2016. Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) presents the data of the survey describing the opinions of the Pridnestrovie residents: who they would like to see as their president, and what path they think would be suitable for their republic.
The level of the declared voting turnout for the Pridnestrovie’s presidential elections is high: 87% of residents are ready to take part in the voting (if the elections took place next Sunday).
The most popular candidate is the Chairman of the Supreme Council of the PMR Vadim Krasnoselsky: 24% of respondents would vote for him. Only 11% would cast their vote for the current president Evgeny Shevchuk. Other candidates gained the support of 1-7 % of candidates. However, it is Shevchuk who heads the candidates’ anti-rating: 50% of respondents would never vote for him.
An overwhelming majority of Pridnestrovie’s residents inseparably ties their future with Russia: 86% believe that the incorporation into the Russian territory would be an optimal path for the country. Ideas to join Moldova or Romania are less popular (supported by 2% and less than 1%, respectively). Nine percent of respondents support the sovereignty.
The survey was carried out by the VCIOM Company among the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic electorate from June 2 to June 9, 2016. The survey took place in the administrative units of the Pridnestrovian Moldavian Republic (PMR), involved 1200 respondents and was commissioned by the Centre for Political Analysis. Multi-stage stratified sample based on general rule of walking, using quotas on the basis of sex, age, and nationality at the final selection stage is used. The margin of error (taking into account the design effect) with 95% confidence interval does not exceed 2.8%. The survey method is community-based formalized face-to-face interviews (tablet-based). In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the field work should be taken into account.
