Results of our studies

11 October 2021. VCIOM presents the findings of a survey devoted to online shopping among Russians.

An overwhelming majority of Russians (84%) use the Internet; three-quarters of Russians (74%) do it on a daily basis; 35% spend more than four hours a day online (54-67% of youth); 7% use the Internet several times a week; 1%, several times a month; and 2%, occasionally but at least once every six months. Sixteen percent of Russians do not use the Internet (40% of those aged 60+). Ten years ago, in 2011, only 30% of Russians used the Internet on a daily basis; half of respondents (50%) did not use it at all.

Three-quarters of Russian Internet users (74%) have experienced online shopping (29% in 2011). Most of Russian Internet users bought the following items online:  42% bought clothes and shoes (9% in 2011); 31%, small domestic appliances (6% in 2011 ); 29%, air and train tickets and travel vouchers (7% in 2011); 27%, electronics (7% in 2011); and 25%, household appliances (4% in 2011). Only 26% of Internet users have never bought anything online (71% in 2011).

Russian nationwide VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on October 1, 2021. A total of 1,600 of Russians aged 18 and older took part in the survey. Results are based on telephone interviews. Stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of Russian landline and mobile phone numbers was used. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes to the wording of questions and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
