OLYMPIC GAMES IN SOCHI: WILL WE TAKE REVENGE FOR VANCOUVER?

MOSCOW, March 4, 2010. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning the amount of Russians who are going to visit Sochi in 2014. Do they believe that our country will repeat success of the previous countries-organizers in a number of gold medals? What is more important: successful organization of Olympic Games of successful performance of our team?

Only 11% of respondents are going to visit Sochi in 2014, among them the inhabitants of Southern district (21%) and Far East district (19%), young people of 18-24 years old (17%) and well-to-do respondents. The majority of Russians (78%) don't have plans to visit Olympic Games, especially the inhabitants of Volga district and Siberian district (88 and 86%), elder and poor people (82 and 88%).

The majority of Russians have no doubt about the fact that Russia will repeat success of the previous countries-organizers of Olympic Games and lead by a number of gold medals (61%). This confidence is typical for the youth (70%), the inhabitants of the Southern and Far East districts (75 and 76%). Although every fifth is skeptical about the abilities of our country (21%) - as a rule these respondents are 35-44 years old (26%) and the inhabitants of Central district (26%).

As it viewed by our fellow-citizens it is more important for Russia to perform successfully on Olympic Games in 2014 than to provide good organization and conducting of Games 53 versus 39%). The importance of the results is mentioned by respondents of 18-24 years old (61%). At the same time the inhabitants of the majority of regions and towns admit the priority of successful performance of our team (48-75% and 48-63%). The inhabitants of North-Western district, Moscow, St. Petersburg notice the importance of good organization of Olympic Games (53 and 56%).

The initiative Russian opinion poll was conducted on March 13-14, 2010. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 140 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4 %.
