Price increase makes Russians refuse to purchase expensive products (34%) or purchase particular products (30%).
MOSCOW, September 21, 2010. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing what measures Russians take to combat inflation.
Russians try to resist inflation mainly by changing their consumer behavior: 34% refuse to purchase expensive products and goods; 30% quitted consuming particular products (34 and 31% respectively did so last year). Nine percent spend their savings to buy products and consumer goods. Other 3% invest in durables.
Rarer Russians search for the opportunity to have a side job (25%) or ask for the increase of salary (6% against 10% a year ago).
Only 2% fight against increasing prices by attending political meetings, demonstrations, writing inveighs.
Those who economize on particular goods are Far Easterners (42 and 45% respectively). Those respondents who spend savings to buy products and consumer goods are residents of the Volga district (12%), Far-Easterners and residents of North-Caucasus region (12 and 13% respectively). The latter more often than others search for the opportunity to have side job (31%). Residents of North-Western Federal district claim for a salary increase (14%). The protest activity is highest among Southerners (10%).
Those who restrict their consumption are basically elderly respondents: most of them refuse to purchase expensive products (48%) or refuse to buy any products (42%). Those who try to find additional source of income are Russians aged 35-44 (37%). Russians aged 18-24 ask to raise their salaries (11%).
The higher the level of education of Russians is, the more often they search for the opportunity to have a side job (13% of Russians with low level of education against 30% of those with high education diplomas). At the same time, the share of those who refuse to purchase particular goods is increasing from 26% among those with high level of education to 43% among those with low level of education.
The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on August 21-22, 2010. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 140 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The margin oferror does not exceed 3.4%.
