IN BRIEF

43% of Russians have opposite sex friends. Gap in age is also common; however friendship between people of different religions is a rare thing.

MOSCOW, September 27, 2013. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning how many Russians have friends of the opposite sex, different generations, different level of income, nationalities, and religions.

Friendship between man and woman is rather common in Russia. Forty-five percent of Russians report that they have opposite sex friends. At the same time, men more often say that they have female friends (46%), whereas women have less male friends (40%).

Gap in age is not an obstacle to friendship:  50% report that they have friends of different ages.  Those who say that are 18-24-year-old (57%) and 25-34-year-old respondents (55%).

Forty-five percent of respondents have friends with different levels of income (45%). They are basically Russians who assess their level of income as high (51%).

People of different nationalities can rarer make friends (39%).  Least popular friendship is a friendship between people of different religions – 30%.

The VCIOM opinion polls were conducted on August 24-25, 2013. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
