23 September 2021. VCIOM presents the findings of a survey among Russians devoted to popular sources of information and Internet use.

Most of Russians get news about economy, politics and society in their country and region from central television (47%), social media and blogs (42%) and conversations with people (40%).
At the same time, the main sources of national news are television (42%, 11-19% of young respondents) and social media and online blogs (21%, 35-45% of young respondents).
Popularity of social media and messengers |
The most popular social media and messenger apps in Russia are WhatsApp (83%), YouTube (75%), Vkontakte (61%), Instagram (53%), and Telegram (42%). The same social media and messenger apps have the highest daily reach.
The users of social media and messenger apps do the following activities on these platforms (top three activities in each social media network and messenger app):
• Vkontakte users often socialize with friends (59%), look through photos, watch videos and listen to music (42%), and read entertaining content (30%);
• Odnoklassniki users most typically socialize with friends (70%), look through photos, videos and listen to music (37%), and get news about their country and region (19%);
• Facebook users most frequently socialize with friends (34%), get news about their country and region (27%), and read economic and political analysis (23%);
• Twitter users often read economic and political analysis (42%), get news about their country and region (33%), and read entertaining content (23%);
• YouTube audience most frequently watch videos and listen to music (51%), and read educational (37%) and entertaining (35%) content;
• Instagram users most typically look through photos, watch videos and listen to music (52%), socialize with friends (46%), and also read entertaining content (40%);
• Telegram users message their friends and acquaintances (50%), communicate for work purposes (34%), read economic and political analysis as well as educational content (25%, each);
• Viber users more often message friends and acquaintances (64%), communicate for work purposes (38%), watch photos, videos and listen to music (12%);
• WhatsApp users often message friends and acquaintances (81%), communicate for work purposes (46%) and take part in group chat discussions (18%);
• TikTok users often watch photos, videos and listen to music (58%), read entertaining content (43%), as well as get news about their country and region (13%).
Every third user of social media and messenger apps in Russia (29%) spends on them more than 3 hours a day (72% of the 18-24-year-olds); 16%, 2-3 hours; 25%, 1-2 hours; 19%, half an hour; 9%, less than half an hour a day.
Social media and messenger apps user are mostly interested in the following contents: national news and world news (49%), politics (42%), education and self-development (39%), humor (37%), and foods and recipes (36%).
Trust in domestic software |
When choosing between the Russian and the foreign software programs, 40% of Russians opt for domestic programs and apps; 18% prefer the foreign ones; 35% do not have any specific preference (41-50% among young persons).
Most of Russians (77%) consider that domestic software can compete with the foreign one (85% of the 18-24-year-olds); they are opposed by 12% of respondents.
Russian nationwide VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on September 20, 2021. A total of 1,600 of Russians aged 18 and older took part in the survey. Results are based on telephone interviews. Stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of Russian landline and mobile phone numbers was used. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes to the wording of questions and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
