Connections and useful acquaintances are needed for state officials, those involved in consumer services, restaurant and hotel business.  

MOSCOWApril 14, 2011. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) and  HeadHunter Company present the data describing the role of connections and backstage influence in making career. VCIOM has studied the public opinion, and the HeadHunter Company was focused on the attitudes of representatives of different professional areas.

The main factors for a successful career for 37% of Russians are professional training, 32% - hardworking and patience, and 25% - prestigious education. However, 24% believe that no successful career is possible without the right connections.

There is no career without connections in such spheres as consumer services (52%), law (49%) and health care (49%). On the contrary, connections are least important for those involved in IT sector (17%), FMCG (22%) and education (27%).

Useful connections helped 24% of Russians make their career. In most of the cases people get good job (68%), get promotion (9%) or avoid firing (8%) through connections.

Those who used connections more than others are workers of diversified companies (73%), consumer services` companies (71%), restaurant and hotel business (65%), mass media (63%) and automobile industry (59%).

 

The higher the position of respondents is, the more useful the connections are: 47% of respondents working in communications sphere and 54% of top managers benefited from connections. Connections are useful for 64% of state and municipal workers and totally useless for unqualified personnel.

Fifty four percent of Russians recognize to have used connections for career because there did not have any way out. Most of those who did so are retail workers 64%), mining and mineral processing (52%) and health care (46%) workers. Twenty seven percent believe that there is no point wasting time if there is someone who can help you. Those who share this stance are basically poeple working in restaurant and hotel business (46%) and IT sector (39%).

People do not use connections because they do not have them (50%). They are mainly people working in real estate and construction sector (64%). 23% of Russians do not want to feel obliged: they are mostly FMCG employees (56%) and restaurant and hotel business workers (45%). The share of respondents who did not use connections because they knew they could find a job by themselves is 18%. They are basically health care workers (35%) and diversified companies` employees (33%).

Generally Russians approve of using connections to find a job - 68% think it is normal. Most of those who think so are workers of transport and logistics sphere (40%), automobile industry and business services (38% for each). One-fifth of Russians (20%) believe that connections should not be used to build career.

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on 12-13 March, 2011. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin oferror does not exceed 3.4%.

HeadHunter online poll was conducted on 14-22 March, 2011 among   3163 residents of Russia.
