MOSCOW, February 22, 2008 Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents information concerning what attitude Russians have towards the presidential contender Gennady Zyuganov, how they estimate his chances to win presidential elections 2008 and what political prospects they see before him.G. Zyuganov is known to the wide majority of Russians: 14% know about him, and follow his political activity, another 70% know this politician, but do not follow his political activity. 13% of respondents have only heard this politician’s name and 1% of respondents have never heard of him. If compared with the data obtained in November 2006, G. Zhyuganov’s level of reputation has remained practically the same. The young aged 18-24 years are the least informed of his political activity (70% of respondents belonging to this age group know of his work, including 3% who follow it), respondents aged 60 and older are the ones best informed about his work (94% and 29% respectively).Despite of G. Zyuganov's popularity, over a half of respondents (57%) find it hard to indicate what ideas and values the leader of the Communist Party stands for. The others specify that he defends the ideas of communism and socialism, coming back to the past (as 19% of respondents identify); the values of equality and justice (10%), increase in pensions and salaries, ensuring an adequate level of living; free public health services and education (5% for each option). If compared to the data obtained in October 2006, the share of respondents who tend to trust him, has decreased from 25% down to 20%, whereas the share of respondents who are not too confident in him, has risen from 61% up to 67%. The older the respondents are, the higher the share of those who trust the Communist Party leader among them is (ranging from 7% among the youth of 18 to 24 years old up to 37% in the group of respondents who are 60 years and older).G. Zyuganov inspires negative emotions in the respondents more often than positive ones. Respondents name respect (13%) and hope (8%) among the positive feelings they associate with him and distrust (23%), antipathy (8%) and scepsis (7%) among the negative ones. 41% of respondents speak of the “indifference” they feel towards this politician. If compared to October 2006, increased have the feelings of distrust (from 17% up to 23%) and indifference (from 31% up to 41%), whereas naming condemnation has become much less frequent (from 10% down to 2%).  The permanent electorate of the KPRF leader totals 6% of respondents: as many respondents state that they “always vote for G. Zyuganov and KPRF”. Another 7% sometimes vote for him and his party, and sometimes give preference to other parties and presidential contenders. 12% voted for G. Zyuganov and the party headed by him at least once. The majority of respondents state that they have never voted for G. Zyuganov or KPRF. G. Zyuganov’s potential electorate at the presidential elections on March 2 this year accounts for 15% of respondents, this includes 7% who will definitely vote for him and 8% who will probably do so. Over a half of respondent consider voting for G. Zyuganov at the presidential elections, as not at all possible (56%). 96% of those who "have always given their vote to G. Zyuganov and KPRF", are going to vote for him again (including 82% who indicate that they will definitely do so).The majority of Russians (61%) think that G. Zyuganov will most probably lose the elections on March 2. Another 27% are not sure of that the KPRF leader may win them. Only 3% of respondents expect him to win the elections, but only after a hard struggle. 22% of KPRF supporters believe that he will win on March 2, 38% are not too confident of the fact but still consider it possible and 21% expects that he might lose the elections. The share of respondents characterising G. Zyuganov as a politician with great prospects has decreased. If every third respondent (37%) called him a politician of the day before in November 2006, every second respondent does it now (53%). The viewpoint that he has achieved a lot but will hardly be able to achieve more at the moment (from 33% down to 29%) as well as that he is a politician with great future prospects (from 11% down to 6%) have both become less popular. At the same time, the overwhelming majority of respondents (93%) find it hard to provide the name of at least one other politician who could head KPRF and lead it better than G. Zyuganov does. 79% of KPRF supporters find it hard to provide an answer to this question, and 8% assume that there is no worthy replacement for G. Zyuganov at the moment. 5% of KPRF supporters name N. Kharitonov and 3% mention Zh. Alferov a possible replacement. The initiative All-Russia opinion poll was conducted by VCIOM on February 16-17. 1600 respondents were interviewed each time in 153 population areas of 46 regions of Russia. The statistical error does not exceed 3.4%.
