IN BRIEF

MOSCOW, March 20, 2019. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data of a study devoted to gender equality.

There is no single opinion among Russians on whether equality of rights and responsibilities between men and women in various spheres is possible: 42% of respondents are confident that equality of rights is only possible in certain spheres (46% of women and 50% of the 25-34-year-olds); others (38%) say that full equality of rights is possible in all spheres (45% of men). In addition, 62% of Russians consider that it is important to strive for full equality of rights between men and women. Thirteen percent of respondents believe that equality of rights is impossible in general (16% of the 35-44-лyear-olds).

Every second respondent (53%) says that men and women can have equal responsibilities only in certain spheres; every third (32%) says that it is possible to achieve full equality of responsibilities. Fifty-nine percent of respondents believe that it is important to strive for full equality of responsibilities between men and women.

Feminist movement aiming to achieve equality of political, economic, personal and social rights between men and women is supported by 31% of Russians (44% of the 18-24-year-olds). On the contrary, 55% of Russians do not support feminism (60% among persons aged 45-59).

VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on March 10, 2019. The survey involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and was carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
