Every second Russian kept track of the presidential campaign that took place in France and recognized the importance of the results of the election, as the VCIOM-Omnibus daily survey suggests. 

MOSCOW, May 2, 2017. The Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the results of a survey devoted to the attitudes of Russians towards the 2017 French presidential election.

Every second Russian is interested in French presidential election campaign (55%); 10% of them report to keep track of the election regularly; 45% - from time to time. Respondents aged 60 and over pay more attention to the French election than young respondents (64% vs 23%).

According to 57% of respondents, the results of the French presidential election are important for Russia (this share is higher among women: 62%). Men are divided in their opinions: 48% think the election is important, 45% oppose them. One-third of Russians (35%) think that the outcome is not very important for Russia.

Marine Le Pen is the most recognizable figure in Russia; 71% of respondents have heard about her. The second position is held by Francois Fillon and Emmanuel Macron: every second Russian heard about them (52% and 50%). And only every third respondent heard about Jean-Luc Melenchon (34%).

Russians tend to favor Marine Le Pen (71%); only 8% have a liking towards Macron. One-quarter of Russians (26%) do not favor any of the candidates who went for a second round (in both capitals this share is lower than in small cities; 18% vs 28%).

The VCIOM-Sputnik Russian nationwide survey was conducted on April 26-26, 2017, using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia, and involved 1200 respondents. Russians aged 18 and over took part in the survey. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 3.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the surve
