Russians would entrust women with health and education issues but they are still not ready to perceive women as heads of enforcement agencies.
MOSCOW, September 30, 2016. Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) presents the data of the survey describing what female politicians Russians know; what public offices are good for women.
Valentina Matvienko is the most popular Russian political figure (according to August 2016 survey): more than one –quarter (28%) remember her name when mentioned about female politicians and public figures. Rarer Russians name Irina Khakamada (14%). Top five most famous women include Ella Pamfilova (7%), Irina Yarovaya (6%), Valentina Tereshkova (5%). The remainder was cited by 3% of respondents.
According to the Medialogia Company analysis, most of mentions of the women in the list of female surnames from January to September 2016 referred to Maria Zakharova (55 541), followed by Elvira Nabiullina (48 494), Ella Pamfilova (48 197), Olga Golodets (45 482), and Valentina Matvienko (44 524).
Respondents believe that due to certain personal traits women could be useful in healthcare (60%) and education (50%). When directly asked, most of respondents reply that they would favor women as Ministers of health, education or welfare (89%).
Two-thirds of Russians (66%) would like women to be heads of political parties. Respondents would entrust the women with the post of prime minister (55%) or head of parliamentary party/ State Duma committee (59%). At the same time, Russians are not ready to see woman as Russia’s president: only 32% favor the idea, whereas 61% oppose it. Finally, army and internal affairs bodies in public consciousness are closely linked with the male image: female ministers of defense, internal affairs or general prosecutor are accepted only by 12% of respondents.
The VCIOM telephone survey was carried out on August 27-28, 2016, using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of telephone numbers operating in Russia, and involved 1600 respondents. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the field work can introduce bias into the survey.
Russian media analysis is carried out by the Medialogia Company using the Medialogia media database involving 32500 sources such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, news agencies and online media. The study took place from January 1 to September 28, 2016.
