IN BRIEF

Today young people independently choose their life path abandoning the lifestyle of their parents. Older generation, in turn, tries to take into account the opinion of the young.

MOSCOW, June 27, 2018. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data of a survey devoted to Youth Day in Russia.

Thirty-six percent of Russians say that older and younger generations fail to understand each other due to different life experiences; remarkably, this share has increased from 29% in 2014.  Those who feel the lack of understanding most acutely are persons aged 18-24 (49%). They are opposed by 28% of those who think that living in the same country makes mutual understanding possible. A further 17% report no contradictions between the generations. Every tenth (9%) considers that generational issues do not exist.

The share of Russians who tend to think that older generations act solely in their own interests not paying attention to the opinion of the younger ones is decreasing (from 37% in 2012 to 31% in 2018). However the majority (87%) believe that elderly people in Russia do not get what they deserve (an increase from 78% in 2012).

Three-quarters of Russians (75%) consider that children should abandon the lifestyle of their parents and search for their own path in life: those who think so are basically young respondents aged 18-24 (83%). The percentage of those who say that young people should step after their parents has decreased by 12 p.p. since 2014. The majority (83%) mention that today young people tend to choose their path in life on their own.

No considerable difference is found between the responses of people who have minor children and those who do not.

The VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on June 24, 2018, and involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and was carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey

The 2004-2014 results are based on household surveys.
