IN BRIEF

Russians say that the Syrian uprising is caused by the hostile actions of foreign countries, however, they do not support any of the parties involved in this conflict.

MOSCOW, July 27, 2012. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing what Russians think about the situation in Syria, as well as what position, they think, Russia should take in this conflict.

Forty-four percent of Russians follow the situation in Syria.  Most of those who put attention to the conflict are elderly respondents (56%), supporters of A Just Russia (52%) and CPRF (54%) parties. Fifty-two percent of respondents are not interested to know what is happening in Syria; they are basically young respondents (62%).

Assessing the situation in Syria, Russians tend to think that the conflict is nothing but a provocation of foreign countries (46%), rather than a civil rebellion against regime (19%). The supporters of the former position are mostly adherents of A Just Russia party (54%), as well as those who follow the developments in this country (63%).

Russians do not support any of the parties involved in the conflict (57%). Supporters of LDPR party (61%) and young Russians (63%) are neutral. The remainder equally supports both Syrian authorities (14%) and opposition (11%).

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted June 7-8, 2012. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
