Russians still keep track of the foreign exchange rate fluctuations over the recent half a year. Not too many Russians prefer US dollars as a currency to keep money in.
MOSCOW, August 11, 2015. Russian Public Opinion Research Centre presents the information concerning the ways to invest money: what the most reliable way to keep money is; whether Russians keep track of fluctuations in US dollar exchange rates; what currency they choose to keep money in; how much they expect the Russian ruble will cost in three months/a year. The press release contains the results of the Russian media monitoring conducted by the Medialogia Company[1].
Buying property is still the most reliable way to invest money, according to half of respondents (48%); this proportion has almost stayed the same during several years.
Every fourth prefers keeping money in a bank (25%). Twenty-seven percent keep money at home, mainly rubles (18%), rather than foreign currency (9%). Sixteen percent prefer investing in precious metals, gold in particular.
An overwhelming majority of Russians save money in rubbles (sample average – 53%). Forty-one percent of Russians do not make savings (compared to 49% in the end of 2014). US dollar (7%) is more popular currency than euro (4%) to keep savings in.
According to the latest data, half of Russians (52%) keep track of the situation in the money market (18% - regularly, 34% - from time to time); this percentage is lower than in the beginning of the year (65% in January). Those who are interested in exchange rates are mainly residents of Moscow and St. Petersburg (78%), those with high level of income (65%) and high level of education (63%).
The Medialogia analysis suggests that many publications concerning fluctuations in exchange rates in the Russian media over a year referred to the Russian ruble (357 899), followed by the American dollar (272 291) and euro (165 734). The citation peak was recorded in December 2014; it was caused by fluctuations in exchange rates.
The US dollar forecast does not differ from its actual exchange rate. According to Russians, in three months the average cost of US dollar will be 58 rubles; in a long term perspective (in a year) respondents expect the US dollar to cost the same (58 rub.)
The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted July 25-26, 2015; 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 settlements in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.5%.
Monitoring and analysis of the Russian media publications were carried out by the Medialogia Company using 26100 sources such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines, information agencies and online media. The ranking was based on the number of publications in the Russian media. Research period: August, 2014 – July, 2015.
