Russians would like to see Father Frost, Misha (bear), Matreshka or tigers as Sochi Olympics mascots.

 

MOSCOWNovember 24, 2010. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the information concerning which creature Russians choose to be Sochi Olympics mascot.

 

Russians believe, that the most important feature for the Olympics mascot is that it should be easy to remember and understand (39%), and to reflect the cultural specifics of the host country (35%). Besides, the mascot should evoke positive emotions 30%) and create Winter Olympics holiday atmosphere (26%). Less Russians think the mascot should convey the values of the modern Olympics movement (18%), and finally, least Russians tend to prize advertising potential of the mascot (10%).

 

According to the above-mentioned criteria, the best mascot for Russians would be Father Frost (Image 6) tigers (Image 9), Misha (bear) (Image 8), hare (Image 7), Matreshka (Image 5), and the worst ones are frog (Image 4) and leopard (Image 2).

 

Father Frost is regarded to be the most recognizable and easiest to understand mascot (13%); it is slightly inferior to Misha (18%). Russians also mention tigers and hare (12% for each), and Matreshka (11%).

 

In terms of reflecting Russian culture, Russians put Matreshka on the first place, which is followed by Misha (14%) and Father Frost (12%).

 

Positive emotions are evoked by Matreshka (17%), tigers (15%), hare (14%), Father Frost (10%) and baby mammoth (10%).  

 

In terms of reflecting the values of the Olympic movement, tigers are ranked first (26%), followed by Misha (12%), hare (11%), Father Frost and Matreshka (9% for each).

 

As to advertising potential, Matreshka is recognized to be the best mascot (19%), followed by Misha (15%), hare (12%), the Father Frost (10%), and tigers (9%).

 

When choosing the Sochi Olympics mascot, most of Russians vote for the bear (17%), hare, tigers (14% for each) and Father Frost (13%). Least popular mascot is frog called Zoich: no way 36% of Russians would vote for this mascot.  

 

Most of Russians support the movement voting for the Father Frost to be the Sochi Olympics mascot (51%). They are basically Southerners (68%) and residents of North Caucasus (65%).

      

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on 13-14 November, 2010. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 138 sampling points in 46 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
