One-fifth of Russians have been promoted at work over the recent years (20%). Those who have had a promotion were respondents with higher education diplomas (35%), with high income (32%), and aged 25-34 (28%). At the same time, most of respondents (76%) have held the same position.

More than one-third of the employed respondents (38%) say that they have no chances to get advancement at the current job (over seven years these attitudes have not changed – 38% in 2007).

Those workers who would like to be promoted try to do their job in an honest manner (13%) and to upgrade their skills (8%). Those who do not make any efforts to get higher position say that career building is not a top priority for them (15%). Some persons are satisfied with the job they currently have (1%) or started a business (1%).

Half of respondents fail to answer what they would sacrifice to get promotion at work (51%). More than one-quarter of Russians (28%) are confident that they would not sacrifice anything for work. Every sixth (15%) would devote all free time to get advancement. Only 1% would sacrifice personal life and family for work. Less than 1% of Russians would sacrifice their health; the shares of those who would accept low salary or move to another city are less than 1%.

The VCIOM opinion poll was conducted on September 20-21, 2014. 1600 respondents were interviewed in 130 communities in 42 regions of Russia. Data are weighted by gender, age, education, working status and type of settlement.  The margin of error does not exceed 3.4%.
