MOSCOW, 24 October 2024. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the findings of a survey commissioned by Social Research Expert Institute (EISI) and devoted to the public perceptions of BRICS.
On October 22-24, Kazan is hosting the 16th BRICS international summit, a key political event. The Summit is going to be a significant step in strengthening the positions of the participating countries in the global stage and a new world order.
According to an October survey conducted by VCIOM, an overwhelming majority of Russians are aware of the BRICS organization in varying degrees (83%), including 41% of those who are well aware; 42% are aware but don’t know any details.
Russia’s decision to be a BRICS member is seen as a right decision, and its participation, as an important step (87%, each); nine out of ten respondents who are aware of BRICS share this opinion (92% and 91% respectively). Eight in ten Russians support Russia’s participation in the activities of this organization (82%); every seventh respondent is likely indifferent (14%); only 2% have unfavorable opinions.
Seven in ten respondents think Russia’s participation in this organization is beneficial (69%; 75% among those who are aware of BRICS; they say that both parties, Russia and other member states, are equally interested in expanding cooperation (72%; 75% among those who are aware of BRICS). Two-thirds of Russians think BRICS has a huge impact on global economy (68%).
Russian VCIOM-Sputnik telephone survey was commissioned by Social Research Expert Institute (EISI) and conducted October 23, 2024. A total of 1,600 respondents aged 18 and older took part in each survey. Survey method: telephone interview, stratified random sample based on a complete list of mobile phone numbers in use in Russia. The data were weighted for socio-demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes to the wording of questions and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
Key effectiveness indicators, survey of 23 October, 2024: cooperation rate (CR)* = 0.7350; minimum response rate (MRR)** = 0.0184; response rate (RR)*** = 0.0872. Calculations are based on corporate standard https://profi.wciom.ru/principy_standarty/korporativnyj-standart-po-izmereniyu-rezultativnosti-oprosov-sputnik-vciom/
* CR: the number of complete interviews divided by the sum of: а) complete interviews and b) non-interviews with eligible respondents.
** MRR: the number of complete interviews divided by the sum of: а) complete interviews, b) interrupted interviews after successful screening and c) all the respondents where it is unknown whether they meet the selected criteria or not.
** RR is calculated in the same way as MRR, with the only difference that the number of respondents with unknown eligibility decreases proportional to the percentage of eligible cases in the total number of respondents with identified eligibility or non-eligibility.
