MOSCOWOctober 8, 2009. On the occasion of the 50th anniversary of Boris Nemtsov Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data describing how Russians evaluate the potential of Boris Nemtsov as a politician, what feeling he evokes, and whether Russians are ready to support him in case he runs for mayor or head of administration in their locality.

Every fifth Russian is confident that Nemtsov has achieved a lot but he is unlikely to achieve more (21%). Most of such respondents are residents of the Volga District (26%), Fair Russia party supporters (33%) and respondents aged 25-34 (24%). At the same time, 10% of respondents are confident that he has good future prospects: mainly Siberians (14%) and Democrats electorate (38%).

 

A relative majority, 37%, consider Boris Nemtsov to be a politician of yesterday, and his influence and authority to have been reducing. Most of those who have such opinion are residents of Central and North-Western Federal Districts (47% and 44% respectively), supporters of CPRF (55%) and Russians aged above 45 (43-44%).

 

More than one-third of Russians feel indifferent to Boris Nemtsov (36%). Nineteen percent of Russians feel distrust; every tenth (10%) feel antipathy towards him. Respondents also mentioned respect (8%), hope and likes (7% for each), frustration and skepticism (6% for each), trust and condemnation (3% for each); 16% were undecided. Most of those who are indifferent are inhabitants of medium-sized cities (40%) and Russians aged 18-24 (51%). Those who distrust Nemtsov are metropolitan residents and inhabitants of big cities (22-25%) and respondents aged above 45 (22-25%); those who feel antipathy are basically Muscovites sand St.Petersburgians  (21%) and Russians aged above 35 (11-12%). 

 

The electorate potential of Boris Nemtsov is not very high: only 17% would vote for him running for mayor or head of administration of their locality (12% - rather yes, 5% - definitely yes). More than half of respondents (61%) would not support Nemtsov: "definitely no" (39%), "rather no" (22%). Twenty-two percent were undecided. Most of those who support Nemtsov are women (18% versus 15% of men) and Democrats adherents (63%). Muscovites and St.Petersburgians (77%), men (66% versus 59% among women) and LDPR party supporters tend to have the opposite point of view (77%).

The initiative Russian opinion polls were conducted on April 18-19, 2009. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 140 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error doesnot exceed 3.4 %.
