The balance of positive and negative assessments of the performance of the Chechen leader keeps improving, according to the VCIOM-Omnibus daily omnibus survey data.

MOSCOW, May 12, 2017. The Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the results of a survey devoted to the attitudes of Russians towards the Chechen leader Ramzan Kadyrov.

The Chechen leader is popular among Russians: only 6% of respondents failed to answer who he was during the survey; 2% failed to tell what he was known for, whereas the majority could describe him.

Neutral assessments of the Chechen leader prevail: Chechen leader (70%) and positive assessments such as “person who stabilized the situation in the region” (5%), “good and kind” (4%), “patriot” (4%). Kadyrov is associated with the development of Chechnya, increase in population’s well-being and fight against terrorism/banditry.

According to the Medialogia Company analysis, a total number of 121,000 mentions devoted to R. Kadyrov were found in the Russian media over a year. Most of mentions were in October 2016. The media reported that Kadyrov had stated that Fedor Emelianenko, president of Russian MMA Union, was wrong to criticize the Grozny martial arts tournament involving children’s fights.  The media also told that Kadyrov was elected as the Chechen leader for the third time.  Besides that, heads of Russians regions congratulated Ramzan Kadyrov on his 40^th anniversary.

Based upon the 2016 results, R. Kadyrov was ranked second in the media rating of Russian governors and headed the Medialogia rating of governors-bloggers.

The VCIOM-Omnibus daily survey data show that more and more Russians favor R. Kadyrov: the share of those who respect him has increased from 31% to 42%, those who trust him – from 15% to 24%; those who like him – from 16% to 23%.  The most mentioned negative response obtained less than 10% of votes. Moreover, the percentage of indifferent persons has decreased from 24% to 16%.

More than half of Russians (55%) are confident that Kadyrov does more good to Russia; they are opposed by 4% of respondents; 22% say that his activity can be considered both negatively ad positively.

The VCIOM-Sputnik Russian nationwide survey was conducted on April 26-28, 2017, using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia, and involved 1,200 respondents. Russians aged 18 and over took part in the survey. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.

The results for the 2007, 2016 surveys are based on household interviews.

The Russian media monitoring and analysis is carried out by the Medialogia Company using the Medialogia database of 40,700 sources such as television, radio, newspapers, magazines information agencies and online media. The period of study was May 2016 through May 2017.
