Russians are proud of the organization of the 2018 FIFA World Cup.
MOSCOW, June 14, 2019. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the results of a survey devoted to the first anniversary of the World Cup held in Russia from June 14 through July15, 2018.
An absolute majority of Russians (89%) consider that the 2018 World Cup held in Russia was well organized. Russians are still confident that this event brought more good to Russia (62%) than harm (9%). Those who think so are mainly respondents aged 45-59 (66%) and 60 and over (73%).
As to the active players who participated in the 2018 World Cup, most of respondents favor Artem Dzyuba (21%). Igor Akinfeev holds second ranking (7%), and Aleksandr Golovin is on the third position (2%).
Over the recent year the share of Russians who are indifferent about football has decreased from 57% in 2018 to 51% in 2019. The share of those who are interested in football to varying degrees is growing (43% in 2018 vs 48% in 2019). At the same time, the core of regular football fans (10%) is predominantly men (16%).
Half of respondents kept track of the 2019 Russian Cup to varying degrees (50%). Sixteen percent of them watched the broadcasts of all or most of matches; they were mainly men (19%) and young respondents aged 18-24 (25%).
Apart from watching sports events, Russians are actively engaged in sport activities themselves. Over the recent two years the percentage of those who have never done sports has considerably decreased (from 23% in 2017 to 15% in 2019). Remarkably, one-quarter of Russians (25%) do sport activities regularly.
VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on June 11, 2019. The survey involved 1,600 Russians aged 18 and over. The survey was telephone-based and was carried out using stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of landline and mobile phone numbers operating in Russia. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.
