WHAT RUSSIANS ASK FATHER FROST IN 2019?

IN BRIEF

  • 34% of Russian wish themselves, their relatives and all people health
  • Every tenth Russian (9%) asked financial well-being
  • 63% of Russian parents believe in Father Frost

With the New Year approaching, Russians ask Father Frost health, well-being and happiness.

MOSCOW, December 30, 2019. Russian Public Opinion Research Centre (VCIOM) presents the data of a study devoted to what Russians ask Father Frost to give them as a gift.

The main thing Russians would ask Father Frost for is health for themselves, their relatives and all people (34%). Those are mainly women (42%) and persons aged 45 and older (41%) who want to have this as a gift.

This is followed by material and financial well-being (9%); it is mentioned mainly by young respondents aged 18-24 (18%). Happiness is preferred by every twentieth Russians (6% vs 3% in 2018). Slightly fewer Russians choose peace all around the world (6% vs 10% in 2018). The top five popular wishes includes apartment/dacha (5%); those who ask Father Frost for that are mainly Russians aged 25-34.

In their letter to Father Frost, Russians also asked for a car (5%), overseas trips (3%), decent job/career growth (2%). Other wishes included increase in pensions and salaries and more luck (2%, for each), paying off loans and debts, stability and tranquility, welfare to all people (1%, for each).

VCIOM also asked parents whether their minor children believe in Father Frost or not. Half of respondents who have minor children think that their children believe in his existence (63%). An overwhelming majority of such children are three- to five-year-olds (more than 88%). One-third of Russians say that their children do not believe in Father Frost; those children are mainly aged 10 and older.

Russian VCIOM-Sputnik survey was conducted on December 17, 2019. Results are based on telephone interviews with 1,600 Russians aged 18 and older. A stratified dual-frame random sample based on a complete list of Russian landline and mobile phone numbers is used. The data were weighted according to selection probability and social and demographic characteristics. The margin of error at a 95% confidence level does not exceed 2.5%. In addition to sampling error, minor changes in question wording and different circumstances arising during the fieldwork can introduce bias into the survey.

Several weeks are left before the New Year celebrations. If you wrote a letter to Father Frost this year, what would you ask as a gift? (open-ended question, up to two answers, %)
