Graduated from Moscow State Pedagogical University (Department of History, 1972). Defended a PhD dissertation in Philosophy.
In 1974 - 1991 worked at the Institute of Marxism-Leninism (under the CPSU Central Committee) as Junior, Senior and Leading Researcher. In 1992 - 2001 headed the Center of the Russian Independent Institute for Social and National Problems. In 2001 - 2005 served as the Head of Department at the Institute for Complex Social Research, Russian Academy of Sciences.
Joined VCIOM team in 2003 as Director on Research. In 2007 was appointed Deputy Chairman pf VCIOM Scientific Council, since 2009 serves as its Chairman.

Vladimir Petukhov is an author of more than 100 publications in Russia and abroad regularly appears in the mass media. Often takes part in national and international conferences professional seminars.
Co-authored the following books: "Basic values of Russians", "Changing Russia in the mirror of Sociology", "Russia - new social reality. The rich. The poor. The middle class", "Russia at the crossroads" and others.
Member of the Scientific Council at the Institute of Sociology, Russian Academy of Science, member of the National Strategy Council, editorial boards' member of such magazines as "Public Opinion Monitoring" and "Political Studies" (Polis).
