LACK OF TIME OR LOVE FOR HAMBURGERS: WHY DO RUSSIANS EAT FAST FOOD?
MOSCOW, February 26, 2010. Russian Public Opinion Research Center (VCIOM) presents the data concerning the attitude of Russians to fast food: how often they eat fast food, what dishes prefer and what attracts them in fast food. Every fifth Russian in a varying degree eats fast food (19%), however in most cases not more than once a month (14%). Those who eat in fast food restaurants regularly are in minority: 4% - once a week, 1% - every day. 11% of respondents were there not more than twice. Most of our fellow-citizens don't visit these restaurants (69%). Regular visitor of fast food restaurant (that is a person who visits fast food restaurant more than once a month) is, as a rule, an inhabitant of Far East (36%), Moscow or St. Petersburg (33%), a man (36%) of 18-24 years old (45%), well-educated (27%) and well-to-do (28%) respondent. Burgers and sandwiches are the most favorite dishes of fast food visitors (they are ordered by 47% of respondents). Traditional order as well includes French fried potatoes (28%), tea, coffee or dessert (27%). 20% of respondents prefer milk cocktails and sparkling drinks, 19% - hot dishes, 16% - pizza. Less popular food is salads (10%), hot snacks (6%), sushi (1%). The main argument in favor of fast food is a lack of time for traditional food intake (33%). Other important reason is a lack of opportunity to snack in another place (28%), however 26% of respondents inform that they like fast food. Less significant factors are atmosphere (18%), location and work hours (16%). Low prices (7%), high quality of food (3%), extra bonus as WiFi (1%) are not so important for Russians. 3% of respondents say it doesn't matter where to eat. Men and women go to fast food restaurants by different reasons. Men eat fast food because of lack of time (37%) and because consider this nutrition to be economical (10%). Women are attracted by dishes themselves (29%) and atmosphere of such restaurants (22%). The initiative Russian opinion poll was conducted on February 6-7, 2010. 1600 respondents were interviewed at 140 sampling points in 42 regions of Russia. The margin of error does not exceed 3.4 %.

More than half of Russians (51%) indicate that in their settlement there is a fast food restaurant: 31% inform that there are many of them, 16% - few, 4% - only one. 39% of respondents says that there are no fast food restaurants in their settlement. High number of fast food restaurants is defined by inhabitants of North-Western district (49%), Moscow and St. Petersburg (93%), quite the contrary with inhabitants of the South and countryside (53 and 78%); they prove that there are no fast food restaurants in their places of living.
