Financial activity monitor

Russian financial behaviour is one of the most important factors in realising the presidential project of nationwide modernisation and the raising of competitive capability. With this the study of evaluations of the material situation, of preferences in the consumer and savings fields, of the psychology of individual investors and the level of trust in financial institutions, including the credit system – are all necessary elements in the normal development of any business in Russia.

Since 2000 VCIOM and the analytical group ZIRCON have been monitoring Russian financial behaviour. In 2004 an annual report was dedicated to the problems of savings and investment behaviour of the country’s population.

The following aspects of Russian’s financial behaviour are reviewed in closer detail:

  • the social context of Russian’s financial behaviour: socio-legal, political and economic aspects
  • dynamics of objective and subjective macro indicators
  • socio-psychological determinants of financial behaviour
  • debt behaviour of the Russian population
  • borrowing behaviour of the Russian population
  • regional disparities of Russian’s financial activities

The study is based on a Russia-wide mass survey as well as a database which is maintained since 1995. Due to the results of the study some basic financial strategies of the Russian population can be identified. The dominant strategy the majority of Russians embark on is characterized as “the way of smallest resistance”: “Everything I earn and get – I spend”; savings are made only in the case of surplus after having met everyday needs. Around 20% of Russians regard borrowing as an adequate financial method to make ends meet preferring loans “by trust” (from friends, acquaintances etc.) to bank loans.
