Some 79 percent of those polled said they would hail state regulation of prices, while only 13 percent said they would not support such an anti-crisis measure, according to the All-Russian Centre for Public Opinion, a leading pollster known by its Russian acronym as VTsIOM. Most analysts expect inflation to overshoot this year's government forecast of 11.8 percent and will be higher than even the central bank's less-optimistic forecast of 13 percent.

In contrast to the growing international concern over Russia, public support within the country for Russia’s current course is stronger than at any time since the fall of the USSR and views of the US have reached new lows, according to opinion polls taken since the war in the Caucasus. The Russian public, which overwhelmingly supported the war, has become a bastion of support for hardline policies and may become an obstacle to the few political figures trying to reconnect with the west and maintain economic and political integration, the polls suggest.

Ten percent opposed recognition and 19 percent said they found it difficult to answer, VTsIOM said. The survey of 1,594 people at 140 polling points across Russia was conducted on Aug. 16-17, and had a margin of error of 3.4 percent. The poll was conducted after most of the fighting in Georgia had ended but before Tuesday's announcement by Medvedev that Moscow was formally recognising the breakaway regions as independent states.

When asked who was guilty for the conflict in South Ossetia, 54 percent of those polled blamed Georgia and another 22 percent blamed the United States, a survey carried out by Russia's largest pollsters VTsIOM showed.

The poll found 47 percent of Russians feel large Western countries like the United States, Germany, Britain and Japan seek to solve problems at Russia's expense.

Almost 60 percent of the population think that it is impossible to get rid of corruption in Russia and 53 percent of those asked had no idea about the federal anti-corruption plan, according to the pollster VTsIOM.

The majority of Russia's population is against the early release of the former head of the Yukos oil company, Mikhail Khodorkovsky, according to pollsters VTsIOM. Khodorkovsky's appeal is being considered by a local court in Chita.
